A yellow coating can make beautiful marble look old, cloudy, and dull.
For this Atlanta marble restoration project, we worked on a Calacatta marble table and several marble bathroom vanities. The table had an older protective coating that was starting to turn yellow. The vanities had etching, wear marks, and failing caulk around the sinks and backsplashes.
Each surface needed a different solution.
Removing a Yellowed Coating from a Marble Table
The Calacatta marble tabletop had been coated in the past to help protect it. Over time, the coating began to yellow.
The old coating covered the natural white color and movement of the marble. Instead of looking bright and clean, the table looked cloudy and aged.
We carefully removed the existing coating and prepared the marble for a new protective finish. We then applied MORE® AntiEtch®.
The finished tabletop has a natural honed look and is now better protected from everyday spills and use.
MORE® AntiEtch® is a good option for marble tables because it helps protect against both staining and etching.
Common items that can damage marble include:
- Wine
- Coffee
- Lemon and lime juice
- Vinegar
- Salad dressing
- Tomato sauce
- Some household cleaners
These products can leave dull marks on marble, even when the spill is cleaned up quickly.
Restoring Etched Marble Bathroom Vanities
The marble bathroom vanities had dull spots and wear patterns around the sinks.
This type of damage is common in bathrooms. Toothpaste, soap, cosmetics, cleaners, and other personal care products can react with marble and change the finish.
We diamond-honed the master bathroom vanity tops to remove the etching and worn areas.
Diamond honing removes a very thin layer of the stone. This allows us to remove the damaged finish and create a smooth, even surface.
The marble vanity tops were restored to a natural honed finish.
Sealing the Marble Vanity Tops
After the vanities were honed, we applied a professional penetrating sealer.
A penetrating sealer helps reduce the chance of staining. It gives homeowners more time to clean up water, oils, cosmetics, and other products before they soak into the marble.
A sealer does not stop etching.
That is why it is important to understand the difference between staining and etching before choosing marble protection.
A stain soaks into the stone and changes its color.
An etch mark changes the surface of the marble and often looks dull or lighter than the area around it.
Re-Caulking Around the Sinks and Backsplashes
The old caulk around the sinks and backsplashes had started to fail.
We removed the old material and applied new caulk around:
- The sink edges
- Under the sink lips
- The backsplashes
- The joints around the vanity tops
Fresh caulk improves the finished look of the vanity. It also helps keep water, dirt, and bathroom products from collecting in open joints.
The master bathroom countertops were fully restored, sealed, and re-caulked.
Does Marble Need a Sealer or Anti-Etch Protection?
There is no single marble protection product that is right for every surface.
The best choice depends on where the marble is located and how it is used.
A penetrating sealer may be a good choice for a bathroom vanity with light daily use. It helps protect against stains while keeping the natural look and feel of the marble.
MORE® AntiEtch® may be a better choice for marble tables, kitchen countertops, islands, bars, and other surfaces that are often exposed to food and drinks.
It helps protect against both stains and acid etching.
We help Atlanta homeowners choose the right protection based on:
- The type of marble
- The condition of the surface
- The room where it is installed
- The amount of daily use
- The desired finish
- The risk of staining or etching
The goal is not to sell the same product for every surface. The goal is to choose the treatment that solves the actual problem.
