Case Study: Restoring the Historic Terrazzo Floor at The Myon, Tifton City Hall, Georgia
Client: The Myon, City Hall Building – Tifton, GA
Service Date: July 2025
Scope of Work: Removal of topical finish, patching as needed, and restoration of original terrazzo
Project Overview
The Myon building, a landmark in downtown Tifton, Georgia, features a historic terrazzo floor that had lost its natural beauty over time. Years of wear, cracks, and multiple layers of topical finish had dulled the surface, obscuring its detail and vibrance. Our goal was to remove the topical coatings, make necessary repairs, and bring back the terrazzo’s original luster without altering its historic integrity.
Challenges
- Topical Coating Build-up: Heavy layers of finish created a cloudy, uneven look.
- Surface Wear & Damage: Scratches, embedded dirt, and visible cracks disrupted the floor’s appearance.
- Needed Repairs: Certain sections required patching to restore both structural integrity and visual continuity.
- Historic Preservation Needs: The terrazzo needed restoration that respected the building’s architectural heritage.
Our Process
- Assessment & Preparation
- Inspected the floor to evaluate coating thickness, damage, and patching needs.
- Identified cracks and worn areas for targeted repair.
- Topical Finish Removal
- Used specialized equipment to safely remove the built-up coating without damaging the terrazzo surface.
- Repairs & Patching
- Patched damaged sections of the terrazzo, carefully matching aggregate and color for a seamless finish.
- Surface Refinement
- Deep cleaned to extract dirt and residues from the stone’s pores.
- Honed and polished the terrazzo to restore clarity and natural reflectivity.
- Detail Preservation
- Maintained the original design elements, including “THE MYON” mosaic inlays, ensuring they were sharp and vivid.
Results
- Before: Dull, uneven finish with visible cracks, dirt, and damaged areas. The floor’s natural aggregate pattern was muted.
- After: Clean, crisp surface with enhanced natural gloss. Patched areas blend seamlessly, inlay details stand out, and the aggregate pattern is clearly visible. The historic charm of the terrazzo is fully restored.
Key Takeaway
By removing the topical coating, making necessary patches, and restoring the surface’s natural finish, we revealed the beauty and history beneath. This project improved the floor’s appearance, preserved its design integrity, and honored the craftsmanship of the original installation.
