Granite Fountain Restoration at Georgia Tech
Client: Georgia Institute of Technology
Project: Cleaning, Honing, Polishing, and Sealing Granite Fountain
The Challenge: Deterioration of Granite Surface from Age and Exposure
Over two decades of exposure to the elements and constant circulation of chlorinated water took a toll on the granite fountain at Georgia Tech. Efflorescence—a chalky white substance caused by mineral buildup—had accumulated on the surface, diminishing the fountain’s elegance. Additionally, the granite had become rough, eroded, and lacked its original luster.
About the Fountain: A Key Campus Feature
The granite fountain is an important architectural element at Georgia Tech, adding to the welcoming atmosphere of the campus and reflecting the school’s identity. However, the fountain’s worn appearance was sending the wrong message to visitors, students, and faculty alike.
After considering several restoration companies, Georgia Tech chose N-Motion for our specialized expertise in stone restoration.
Our Approach: A Detailed Restoration Process
The buildup of efflorescence presented a unique challenge. To address it, we began with extensive honing, which took the majority of the three-day project. We then polished the granite and cleaned it with a neutral, stone-safe cleaner to restore its shine.
To protect the stone from further damage, we applied a high-quality granite sealer, focusing on areas most exposed to the constant water flow. This treatment not only improved the fountain’s appearance but also prevented the reformation of efflorescence.
The Results: A Restored Fountain That Reflects Georgia Tech’s Pride
The fountain was transformed, with its granite surface now polished, smooth, and gleaming. Visitors to Georgia Tech can now enjoy the serene flow of water against a stunning backdrop that conveys the pride and elegance of the campus.
